The syringe is a simple reciprocating pump consisting of a plunger, which is tightly assembled in a cylindrical tube called a barrel. The plunger can be pushed and pulled linearly along the inside of the tube, so that the syringe can suck or discharge liquid or gas through the front end (opening) of the tube. The open end of the syringe can be equipped with a hypodermic needle, nozzle or tube to help guide fluid in and out of the syringe. Syringes are often used in clinical medicine to make injections, to inject intravenous therapy into the blood, to apply compounds such as glue or lubricant, and to draw/measure liquids.
